I was not able to grow any sunflowers this year - the slugs and snails decimated them in the rain.

I have heard that roughly crushed eggshells put them off walking on that bit of soil. But not so sure it works myself.
The best answer to stop slugs and snails is pellets but these are high poison to birds who eat the dead or dying slug/snail. Hedgehogs as well as birds are great at keeping the numbers down. I small hole in fences means they can get in and out of gardens.

I'll have to try the shingle and egg shells. I agree with the poison pellets - I think something else is going to eat them. Normally I plant things out when they have got to a good height and then the slugs and snails leave them.

If you go to the beach ever. You can collect sea shells, once crushed they have the same effect. Shingle is probably not quite as effective as it tends to be quite smooth edged.
