I presume it's more a trick of the mind than the eyes, since it's practically a silhouette with virtually no visible detail to determine which direction they're facing; and perhaps with added psychology a "glass half full" person might be more likely to say they're coming whilst someone with a "glass half empty" attitude to life might instead tend to see them going...!

That said, I feel the composition of the picture works better if they're facing away. :)

Here's another optical illusion - what colour are the balls? The correct answer is easy to see but it's still a quite fun effect...
