CAMRA being rather unhelpful!

Post by pieman » Mon Jun 08 2020 6:02pm

Some of you may know about CAMRA, The Campaign For Real Ale.

In January I bought a annual membership for a friends special birthday which would allow him the following, amongst other things,

''Free or reduced entry to over 180 beer festivals

£30 worth of CAMRA real ale vouchers (for use at pubs including JD Wetherspoon, Stonegate, Amber Taverns, Brains, Castle Rock and more) - (these are usually dated so its roughly £3 a month - with some overlap)

The Real Ale Discount Scheme where you receive discounts on pints at over 3,500 participating pubs with your membership card.

None of which he has been able to use in the past 3 months.

I emailed CAMRA to ask, in the light of the fact that he has not been able to make use of the benefits, whether either his membership or the vouchers could be extended -so rather than Jan 2021, it would maybe be March / April 2021.

CAMRA's response

''Unfortunately CAMRA will not be extending vouchers or card expiry dates during this time''

Which does not strike me as very good customer service.

Am i right to feel a little put out, and is there anything I can do?

Thanks

Yes, but that's the trouble with vouchers.... you're in their hands.

Just because I'm paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get me

In light of the extraordinary circumstances, coronavirus pandemic, they should, as a gesture of goodwill, implement a policy of accepting out-of-date vouchers up to a certain time limit.

It's the honourable way.

Many other organisations have extended schemes, waived deadlines for retaining VIP status etc.
This seems churlish of CAMRA, and not good customer relations.

I've no idea how much CAMRA have in their reserves but if it's less than they need to ride out an extended period of low income then the policy may simply be a necessity whilst they struggle to survive.
