Energy prices - to fix or stay as you are

Post by blythburgh » Tue Jan 23 2024 11:00am

We made the decision to fix due to concerns about the Middle East situation which has spread to the Red Sea.

Yes, prices are expected to fall in April but we lived through the early 70's oil crisis. DH was a merchant seaman at the time. His ship was one of the last to get through the Suez canal before the ships got trapped in the Bitter Lakes.

Oddly when we have fixed with Scottish Power in the past, like other suppliers, the fixed rate per unit was higher than the current one. But Octopus decided that our new monthly direct debit payment would go down about £30. That was a surprise and will help offset any losses we make by being on a fixed rate until next January.

But really hard to make a decision. Of course if you are on a prepayment meter you have no choice but to use current price. And I read that 2 million households on prepayment meters will be cut off as they will not have the money to buy a top up. Tragic and makes me feel grateful we are on a normal meter and can pay the same all year round so the summer payments build will help with the far higher winter usage. If you are on a prepayment meter you do not have that cushion.
Keep smiling because the light at the end of someone's tunnel may be you, Ron Cheneler
