Now as many as 800,000 faulty Creda, Hotpoint, Indesit, Proline and Swan (*confusingly all part of the Whirlpool Group of companies) tumble-dryers still awaiting modification or replacement – a large increase on the previous figure given of 500,000:

*Confusing only because Government releases spoke of "Whirlpool" and Whirlpool's own brand appliances do not have any issues...

Standard set up today. Big brands buy the smaller brands and keep them going.

I wonder if the people who have had the problems of fires would describe it as "...low risk"???

Properly evaluated, risk is the combination of likelihood and severity.
If you are involved in an aeroplane accident, your experience may lead you to take a view on the risks of flying. Nevertheless, it remains the fact that (at least for Western airlines) accidents involving injury or fatality are very rare and flying is very low risk.
Without data, we can’t comment on the overall risk for using a Whirlpool tumble dryer. But the experience of individuals does not of itself tell us anything about the risk.

We have one of the affected driers, an Indesit. As it was registered and we hadn't heard from Whirlpool, we contacted them. They apologised and said there were far more machines involved than they first realised, as they had assumed that natural wear and tear would be responsible for many of them being replaced by now (ours is at least 12 years old). We were told to unplug it and not use it and hopefully they would get back to us in about another 2 weeks' time.

Don't hold your breath waiting for them to come back to you.
Much of the criticism of Whirlpool over this is that they have been very slow at notifying owners of affected machines and been equally slow at fixing them. They have clearly taken a view - doubtless with appropriate legal support - that they could avoid liability if an machine such as yours caught fire and would ride out any suggestion of responsibility.
Advice to unplug and not to use is entirely unhelpful for most people, especially if the wait time for fix extends beyond a couple of weeks.

Our bosch is around 20 years old, maybe even older. It is finally being replaced with a washer dryer and the local small shop (they repair as well as sell) we contacted said they could not get the Beko that came out well in the Which report but they would not recommend any Beko stuff.
Keep smiling because the light at the end of someone's tunnel may be you, Ron Cheneler
