May the 4th as Star Wars Day is now tainted by the (alleged) attempt by Disney to coopt, for commercial gain, the established celebration created by fans
However, elsewhere it has other meanings:
In 1493 Pope Alexander VI divided the world between Spain and Portugal - making the gold-rich Americas mainly Spanish. Unsurprisingly, he was Spanish.
In 1919 student protests in Beijing created an anti-imperialist movement that led to the Chinese republic and ultimately communist China.
In 1982 HMS Sheefield was hit by an Argentinian Exocet misile off the Falklands. The ship later sank and 20 crew members were killed. the most famous crew member was Simon Weston, who survived 46% burns and had his face reconstructed.
In 1916, the executions, without trial, of non-leaders of Easter Rebellion led to protests and the continuance of the Anglo-Irish war. One, William Pearse, was not a commander but was brother to the leader, Padraig Pearse and his killing was seen as an act of vengeance. In a final turn of the knife, Willy Pearse was given permission to see his brother before execution on 3rd May, but Padraig was shot whilst Willy was still being transported under guard. Willy was shot the next day.
In Limerick, it is the anniversary of the execution of one of her two sons executed at that time. Ned Daly was a commander, but at 25, he was the youngest rebel executed. The other, Con Colbert, was executed four days later, aged 27.
