I was due to return to the UK this month, do my quarantine and then fly back to Portugal for Christmas with SWMBO. She's stuck here because her ID card is expiring and the normal 4-day turnaround now requires a booked visit (her booking is for December 29th!!) "due to Covid", of course.
Now the lockdown in the UK suggests I might get stuck there.... so I'm staying put. My biggest issue was my meds, which will run out soon..... but I can buy them here for under €20 without prescription, so no problem. Covid seems much etter controlled here - and I can walk the dogs every day!!
By the by, you know that great app the government created for EU citizens to claim settled status? Well SWMBO and I have new Xiaomi phones.... it won't download. Friend has a Samsung, it downloads but won't open. No problm says HO, just send your ID card in the post!! SWMBO is now waiting for Hell to freeze over!
Just because I'm paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get me

I would stay put. There's just too much uncertainty.

Better weather, the dogs etc. A lot of reasons to stay put

We just had 3 days of monsoon.. when it rains, it rains!! But it was needed.
I now have a stream running across my land and yesterday I found a turtle the size of an old half-crown swimming happily. Plus a couple of salamanders and a small smooth snake. I put the turtle back in my pool, because the stream will be gone in a few days....
I'm just back from a 7km walk through the hills with the dogs and drinking a mug of tea in the garden. Life's not bad.
Staying put is the plan for now......

It gets better.... if a bit odd. My meds are the fairly standard mix of statins, gastroresistant aspirin and low-dosage thyroxin. I already discovered that I can buy them over-the-counter in Portugal..... and yesterday I bought them in my local Farmacia - 60 of each of the Aspirin and Thyroxin (almost 2 months supply) and 28 statins..... for the princely sum of €12.43!!
The odd bit is that the most expensive were the Aspirin - they're 100mg rather than the 75mg I get in the UK (they don't sell them here!) and €4.65 for 60... . The Thyroxin was cheaper at €4.21!! The Atorvastatins are exactly the same as I get in the UK ad are actually more expensive per dose.... they we €3.57 for 28. But remember, these are all over-the-counter prices....
How much is it now per item on a prescription?

Might be cheaper but the quality may not be as good as the UK. In the UK we have strict regulations for medicines.

NHS prescription charge is £9.15 if you don't pre-pay (which costs £29.65 for 3 months or £105.90 for 12 months).
Something else to be aware of when filling private prescriptions or in other countries is that prices can vary from one pharmacy to another, sometimes dramatically. So it can help to shop around or even negotiate for any expensive items.

What?
There surely won't be any difference in medicine standards between Portugal and the UK.
