Mr Potato Head to lose "Mr" title in gender-neutral rebrand

Post by expressman33 » Fri Feb 26 2021 9:42am

A gender-neutral makeover will see Mr Potato Head become the toy formerly known as Mr Potato Head. From later this year, the toy - launched almost 70 years ago - will be named Potato Head on packaging.

I have no problem with people changing their gender but feel this is going far too far. What is wrong with Mr Potato Head and Mrs Potato head. Having the two could encourage children to make up stories using the two toys together. Children need role models that are male and female. A very few will end up feeling they are neither fully male or fully female but the vast majority will not.

An "African", an "Asian" an "Oriental" version as well as a "European" version would be good but removing the titles Mr and Mrs is so stupid especially as we can still buy the versions currently called "Mr" and "Mrs".

The outbreak of confected outrage is infallible, as usual, with few people even bothering to read any details.

Their toys are still called the same thing, Hasbro just want to use the same brand and logo for both Mr Potato Head and Mrs Potato Head. That's it. No big deal.

Certainly when i was growing up, Mr Potato Head was my role model. Whatever will children do without having a plastic potato toy to look up to?

This is going too far? But creating different coloured potatoes isn't? Parents can still buy two of them, and throw away the bits they think are gender-specific (or better still, keep them as spares) and give their blond, blue-eyed children two wholesome clearly gendered toys. Children don't naturally make a distinction about sex or race. They learn it.

I think the real reason behind this story is that Hasbro are consolidating the packaging and production costs. They've now got just one product to sell, not two, which saves money.

They're actually expanding the Potato Head product line with a family set later this year...

“The Mr Men” books are renaming them “The” so children won’t be confused by gender stereotypes.

As you add/remove any parts you like , I would of thought it was the perfect toy for a non binary fluid gender person.
