"Food shortages now ‘inevitable’ due to labour crisis, industry warns"
“Everywhere you look in a supply chain there are problems,” said Brennan. “Food already isn’t being replenished into supermarkets quick enough and it’s not just because of logistics but a lack of production.”

I have shopping delivered every week and it is certainly clear to me that there are many more shortages on fresh food mainly than there has been in previous years.

It's no-deal on financial services:
Chancellor confirms that UK has given up trying to secure greater access to EU markets for financial services firms.

City of London has been largely cut off since Brexit completed at end of last year.

Sunak says deal on equivalence “has not happened”.

The shortage of drivers is despite the sharp reduction in cross-channel traffic.

The Covid-related interruption to driving tests (and presumably lessons) provides a handy explanation of w why this is nothing to do with Brexit.

It IS Brexit related.Under the new rules, drivers are not sufficiently skilled to qualify for immigration under the points scheme. There is an alternative 'frontier worker permit' for foreign drivers who started work before December 2020.

It's not just Brexit. There was a shortage anyway, and Covid has really put pressure on. Until recently, Eastern Europeans have formed a significant element of the UK's drivers. Many have returned home due to Covid. Throw in the delays on the driving tests and you've got an acute shortage.

Making drivers work longer isn't the solution. If you've got two routes to cover and only one driver, a couple more hours won't make any difference.

Agree. But it won't stop the Leavers and the government pointing to Covid as the explanation rather than it being smaller contributor.

Brexit is like an accelerant, rather than the spark that causes a problem. Because it limits any ability to address an issue, it amplifies the impact...... If there is a shortage, Brexit rules out any easy answers.

In this case, the obvious way to solve a lack of drivers is to make those you do have work excessive hours. What next?
