Are keen switchers getting a smart meter to save as much as they can now?

I spent a little time looking at the MSE Cheap Energy Club search results earlier this week and noted that the top recommendations for fixed rates are now smart meter only tariffs. If those are excluded then it seemed that staying with Octopus on a variable rate (once my existing fix expires) would be a fair deal, but obviously that's without knowing how severely variable rates will continue to rise in the next 12 months or so. The OFGEM price cap is recalculated every 6 months, so effectively only offers short term protection. There's nothing to stop the price cap rising sharply in April 2022.

EDF have e-mailed a few times recently, trying to tempt me to switch back to them with a £75 incentive. However, whilst I haven't seen/compared their actual fixed price unit rates that would qualify for the offer, there aren't any competitive EDF tariffs showing up in my MSE Cheap Energy Club results.

Green energy with 250.000 customers has ceased trading today.
As has Avro Energy (580,000 customers).

Price cap cannot change until 1 April, it is tipped to increase by at least £280 which is already factored into Octopus 2 year fixed rate

Might be worth going for a very long deal and if prices drop pay the early exit fee.

Shell Energy is to take on the customers of Green Energy
We have appointed Shell Energy to take on the 255,000 domestic customers and a small number of non-domestic customers of Green Supplier Limited (‘Green’), which is ceasing to trade.

No

If I submit my own readings, I can manage reported consumption towards lower rates. With a smart meter, that opportunity is lost.

I have yet to discover a compelling reason to get a smart meter. Except that it would save me having to kneel on the floor to read the gas meter.

When they pay me to take one, I'll consider it. Until then, not happening.

If you've got Santander 123 account then set a high DD and process a refund every month for a little extra. Back in the good old days when S123 was uncapped, it was fairly easy to get £20 a month back with manual readings / high DD on a British Gas account. Still £5 in it for those who can be bothered.
